Neighborhoods of Vancouver
The Coolest Neighborhoods in Vancouver
And whether itâs your first time in Vancouver or youâve been here before, youâll definitely want to get out and explore the city. Each neighbourhood in Vancouver has its own character, and knowing something about them might help you decide where you want to stay or spend time while youâre studying here.
Kitsilano:
Called Kits by locals, Kitsilano is a neighbourhood just south of downtown Vancouver. Itâs easily accessed by bus or bike. Back in the 1960s and 70s, Kitsilano attracted a lot of hippies. The environmentalist organization Greenpeace started here in 1971. Thereâs not too much of Kitsâ hippy past remaining these days, however. In fact, itâs now one of the most expensive parts of the city to live in. And itâs easy to see whyâitâs central, has a great beach and parks, quiet, tree-lined streets and good shopping and restaurants. And they have a huge, free music and art festival every year, which is one of the highlights of summer in Vancouver.

The West End:
Located between Stanley Park and the downtown core, the West End is a popular neighborhood for both locals and international students. The West End includes the beaches that run along English Bay where the Symphony of Fire fireworks displays are held every summer. It is also home to a large LGBTQ community and is the location for Vancouverâs Pride Parade every summer. The high-end shopping streets of Robson and Alberni run through the West End, but thereâs a lot more to the neighborhood than those. Go there for some of the best ramen outside of Japan, or grab a coffee and watch the sunset down at the beach.

Commercial Drive:
A lot of international students never venture beyond the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain Station, but you really should. The Drive is Vancouverâs Italian neighbourhood and it hosts the Italian Day festival every summer. Go there for amazing pizza, gelato and real Italian-style coffee. And definitely check out some of the craft breweries in the âhood. The Drive has kind of replaced Kits as the centre of Vancouverâs counter-culture, so thereâs an even chance youâll stumble across an anarchist drum circle on your way from the pizza joint to the gelato place.
These are just a few of the many great neighbourhoods youâll discover around the city. So, charge up your Compass Card or pump up your bike tires and start exploring!
